Queer Ottawa publication suffers financial woes

Capital Xtra, Ottawa’s only gay and lesbian newspaper, is shutting it’s local offices after 16 years and moving to Toronto.
Founded in 1993, Capital Xtra has been the most significant media force in the national capital region's gay and lesbian community. Published 17 times a year, the publication maintains a fiercely loyal readership. Each issue of 20,000 copies reach 36,000 readers.

Media Exaggerates Sex Negativity

News media is notorious for reporting on negative aspects of sexuality. When searching google news for “sex” an overwhelming majority of the stories concern sex offenders, assault or Tiger’s supposed sex addiction.

Media loves a controversy, and even more so it loves a sexy one.

When a group of angry villagers take up pitch forks to a cause, news agencies are going to take notice. However more often then not when it comes to issues of sexuality, it takes only a few negative voices to get prominent attention
